Living Threads

These are questions and areas I’m living into—evolving lines of inquiry. This page will change frequently as it all unfolds. Each area will eventually link to works on this website and elsewhere. My hope is that I will feel free to be messy with these threads, because it is in the mess that I find the most fertile ground.

  • Epistemology & Philosophy of Science: The central thread. Critiques of demarcation, arguments for epistemic pluralism, philosophy of evidence (critiques of the RCT fetish), tackling the "Ivermectin Problem" by developing alternative criteria for credibility.
  • Phenomenology & Embodied Practice: This thread focuses on the clinical encounter as the primary site of medical meaning. Exploration of the "lifeworld" of the patient, the practitioner's "felt sense," and how contemplative practices inform a non-dual, embodied approach to practice. Questions of standpoint shot through.
  • Social & Political Philosophy of Medicine: This thread examines the power dynamics of medicine. It includes concepts of epistemic injustice, the role of regulatory and commercial pressures in marginalizing non-biomedical knowledge, and the political consequences of a monolithic medical epistemology.
  • Environmental Ethics & Eco-Medicine: This thread explores CM as a "nature-based" system, the link between personal health and ecological health, and medicine as a MacIntyrean "practice" for cultivating ecological and personal virtue.
  • The Future of Chinese Herbalism : Exploring sustainability, geopolitics, the energetics of Chinese herbs and formulas, sourcing ethics, and the network of topics that spin off from these.
  • The Politics & Intimacy of Lineage : What it means to inherit, question, and reweave traditions—medically, spiritually, personally. The complexity of lineage, access/gatekeeping & the relationship of lineage and cultural appropriation.
